Klopp Takes Germany Job, Begins Mission To Restore Glory

Germany have appointed Jürgen Klopp as the new head coach of the national team, with the former Liverpool manager returning to the dugout on a contract expected to run until the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed Klopp’s appointment after reaching an agreement with the highly decorated coach, who replaces Julian Nagelsmann following Germany’s disappointing early exit from the 2026 World Cup.

Klopp’s return marks his first major coaching role since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season after a successful nine year spell that saw him win the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and other major trophies with the English club.

The 59 year old had stepped away from daily management after describing the need for a break, before later taking up a strategic role as Red Bull’s global head of football, but his appointment as Germany boss now brings him back to the touchline.

Klopp is expected to lead Germany through the upcoming Nations League campaign, Euro 2028 preparations and the 2030 World Cup, with the German FA hoping his leadership and winning mentality can revive the fortunes of a national team that has struggled in recent major tournaments.

Germany endured another disappointing World Cup campaign after being eliminated in the last 32 stage, adding to a series of underwhelming performances since their 2014 World Cup triumph, and the DFB believes Klopp’s arrival can bring a new direction to the team.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool manager arrives with a reputation for building competitive teams, developing young players and creating a strong connection between supporters and players, qualities German football officials believe are needed for a national team rebuild.

Klopp’s coaching team is also expected to include familiar faces from his previous managerial spells, with reports indicating that former assistants Peter Krawietz and Pep Lijnders, alongside ex Germany international Sven Bender, will be part of his backroom staff.

The appointment has generated excitement among German football supporters, many of whom see Klopp as a figure capable of restoring confidence and returning the national team to the top level of international football.

Klopp’s first major challenge will be to rebuild a squad capable of competing for trophies again while balancing experienced stars with emerging talents ahead of Germany’s next international tournaments.
