INEC Issues Final Warning To Relocated Voters Ahead Of Deadline

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians who have moved to new locations not to register again but to transfer their existing voter registration details before the closure of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
The electoral body issued the warning as the July 26, 2026 deadline for the CVR exercise approaches, urging relocated voters to ensure their voting records are moved to their current places of residence to enable them participate in future elections without difficulties.
INEC, in a message shared through its official communication channels, said voters who have changed locations should apply for a Transfer of Registration instead of undergoing a fresh registration process.
The commission explained that fresh registration by already captured voters could lead to duplication of records and affect the integrity of the national voter register, which remains a key component of credible elections.
“Have you moved to a new location? Your vote should move with you,” INEC said while encouraging affected voters to transfer their registration to polling units closer to where they currently reside.
The electoral commission stated that eligible voters can complete the transfer process by visiting any CVR registration centre or using its online self service platform designed to make voter services easier and more accessible.
INEC also reminded Nigerians that the ongoing CVR exercise provides opportunities for first time voters to register, while existing voters can update their details, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards and transfer their voting locations.
The commission said registration centres will remain open from 9:00am to 3:00pm, including weekends, until the exercise closes on Sunday, July 26, 2026.
The development comes as INEC intensifies preparations to update the voters’ register ahead of upcoming elections, with the commission repeatedly emphasising the importance of accurate voter information and proper registration procedures.
INEC urged Nigerians who have relocated to act before the deadline, stressing that transferring their existing records remains the correct way to ensure their voting rights follow them to their new communities.
