Former Adult Film Actress Sworn In As Colombian Senator

Former adult film actress Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, popularly known by her stage name Amaranta Hank, has been sworn in as a senator in Colombia after securing a seat in the country’s legislature, marking a major shift from her previous career in the adult entertainment industry to political advocacy.

Ortiz, 33, was inaugurated as a senator representing the left wing Historic Pact coalition in Bogotá after being elected from the Norte de Santander region during Colombia’s legislative elections.

Before entering politics, Ortiz worked as a journalist before joining the adult entertainment industry in 2017, where she became known as Amaranta Hank, before leaving the sector two years later to pursue public service and political activism.

The new senator has built her political campaign around advocating for better protections, social security benefits and legal recognition for adult content creators, arguing that workers in the industry often face exploitation, discrimination and lack of institutional support.

Ortiz said people working in the adult entertainment sector had been neglected because of social prejudice and double standards, insisting that they deserved representation and access to basic labour protections.

She has also pushed for stronger measures against sexual abuse, improved mental health support and policies aimed at protecting vulnerable workers within the entertainment industry.

Her entry into Colombia’s Senate has generated public debate, with critics questioning whether someone with a background in adult entertainment should hold public office, while supporters argue that political leadership should not be determined by a person’s past occupation.

Defending her political journey, Ortiz questioned why former adult industry workers should be denied the opportunity to serve in elected positions, citing examples of individuals who transitioned from controversial careers into politics.

She said her past experiences gave her insight into inequality, labour struggles and social exclusion, which she intends to bring into legislative debates as a senator.

Ortiz’s election came through the Historic Pact coalition, the political movement of outgoing Colombian President Gustavo Petro, which holds the largest number of seats in the country’s Senate.

Her emergence in Colombia’s legislature highlights the growing trend of individuals from unconventional backgrounds entering politics and using personal experiences to influence debates on social and economic issues.

The senator has vowed to use her new position to advocate for policies she believes will improve protections for marginalised groups while challenging what she describes as societal stigma against people from the adult entertainment industry.
