How We Worked Against Atiku in 2023 — Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that he and his allies worked strategically to prevent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi from winning the 2023 presidential election.
Wike made the disclosure on Wednesday during a media chat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he said the strategy was mainly targeted at stopping Atiku, whom he described as the major force behind the PDP’s chances at the time.
“Do you know what we did in 2023? Let me tell you now to shock you. We knew that the man who was controlling the election was Atiku,” Wike said.
“Forget about all the noise about Obi. We gave it to him — take the South-East.”
The minister said the plan involved denying Atiku key support bases within the PDP, particularly in the South-East, by encouraging support for Obi.
He said former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom played an important role in the strategy due to his opposition to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.
“We knew his bias, we knew what was going to happen because of the Muslim-Muslim ticket. We wanted to block Atiku, so we said, support Obi. It was a strategy. We wanted to defeat him, yes. And he took it,” Wike said.
Wike added that the move also affected Atiku’s chances in the South-South, arguing that internal political calculations contributed to the PDP’s defeat in the election.
