Where It All Started For Bibire: From GCI Cadet To SA Security

The Cadet Corps of Government College Ibadan (GCI) stole the spotlight at the Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association reunion yesterday, as they impressed everyone present with an exquisite ceremonial reception accorded to Governor Seyi Makinde during his visit to commission several projects at the college.
For Abayomi Fagbenro-Bibire, popularly known as Bibire, the impressive display rekindled cherished memories of his formative years at GCI, where he was an active member of the Cadet Corps.
The rigorous training he had then instilled in him the virtues of discipline, esprit de corps, respect for constituted rules, and a strong commitment to the discharge of assigned responsibilities, principles that have continued to underpin his years of meritorious service.
Today, as Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Security Matters, Bibire exemplifies how extracurricular engagements during one’s formative years can serve as an invaluable incubator for leadership, discipline, and the capacity to discharge responsibilities in later life.
Bibire is of the view that school cadet training affords young minds an indispensable platform to imbibe essential leadership qualities, which are instrumental to their professional advancement and their ability to navigate the multifaceted challenges of life.
In another development, Bibire commended Governor Seyi Makinde for granting the old boys the latitude to oversee the management and development of their alma mater, while praising the leadership of the President of the Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association (GCIOBA), Wale Babalakin.
He accorded special commendation to members of his 1984 set for their instrumental contributions to the GCI Cadet Corps and their concerted efforts to sustain the programme for the continued benefit of present-day students.
The impressive display of the cadets at the reunion affirmed the continued relevance of the “programme”within the extracurricular framework of the college, particularly its capacity to impart practical life skills and formative values that transcend the confines of conventional academic instruction.
For Bibire, his formative experience in the GCI Cadet Corps remains an integral part of his personal history, and it is particularly gratifying to witness the continuation of what prepares students to assume positions of responsibility across diverse fields of endeavour.
