NSCDC Warns Miners

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has warned mining operators across the country against engaging in illegal mining activities, stressing that ignorance of the law will not protect offenders from prosecution.

The warning was issued by the Commander of the NSCDC Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps John Attah, in a statement released in Abuja, where he urged operators in the sector to ensure that their activities comply with all approved mining laws and regulations.

Attah stated that mining operators must operate within the boundaries of the law, adding that individuals and organisations involved in unauthorised mining would face legal consequences once found culpable.

“Ignorance of the law will never be an excuse. Every operator must ensure that mining activities are conducted within the ambit of the law. Those who choose to operate outside the regulatory framework will face the full weight of legal consequences,” he said.

The NSCDC Mining Marshals have intensified operations against illegal mining activities nationwide as part of efforts to protect Nigeria’s mineral resources, prevent environmental damage and curb criminal activities linked to unregulated mining operations.

The corps has repeatedly raised concerns over the security implications of illegal mining, noting that unregulated activities in some areas have been associated with criminal networks and threats to national security.

The NSCDC also warned operators who mine without the required licences, approvals and regulatory permits to desist from such practices, insisting that only properly authorised mining activities would be allowed to continue.

The warning comes amid the Federal Government’s renewed efforts to sanitise the solid minerals sector, increase revenue generation from mining and ensure that mineral resources are exploited responsibly.

The Mining Marshals, established by the NSCDC to support enforcement within the mining sector, have continued to carry out raids, arrests and compliance operations against illegal miners across different states.

The corps urged legitimate mining operators to cooperate with security agencies and relevant regulators, while warning that those who undermine mining regulations would be made to face the consequences of their actions.
