Tanzania President Loses Husband

Tanzania’s President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has lost her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who died on Monday while receiving medical treatment in Zanzibar.
The death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan was announced by Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi, who expressed condolences to President Samia, the deceased’s family, relatives and the people of Tanzania during the period of mourning.
According to the announcement, Hafidh died at about 8:00 a.m. at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart-related condition.
The Vice President disclosed that arrangements had commenced for his burial in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, the family’s native community.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan became Tanzania’s first gentleman in 2021 after his wife assumed office as the country’s first female president following the death of former President John Magufuli.
President Samia and Hafidh were married in 1978 and had four children, including three sons and a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who is a Tanzanian lawmaker.
Unlike many spouses of African heads of state, Hafidh maintained a relatively low public profile during his time as Tanzania’s first gentleman, focusing largely on family and private life while supporting his wife’s political journey.
Following the announcement of his death, regional leaders expressed their condolences to President Samia and the people of Tanzania, with Kenyan President William Ruto describing him as a lifelong companion to the Tanzanian leader and a distinguished son of the country.
The passing of Hafidh Ameir Hassan comes as Tanzania continues under the leadership of President Samia, who made history in 2021 as the nation’s first female president.
The Tanzanian government and citizens are expected to observe mourning activities as preparations continue for the burial of the former first gentleman.
