Colonel, Soldiers Killed in Insurgent Attack in Borno

A tragic security incident has claimed the lives of a senior Nigerian Army officer and several soldiers after a fresh attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in northeastern Nigeria.

The Commanding Officer of the 242 Battalion, Col. I.A. Mohammed, was among those killed when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded in Monguno Local Government Area.

Military sources report that Col. Mohammed was leading a reinforcement mission after troops stationed at a Forward Operating Base were attacked late Sunday night.

While advancing to support his men, his vehicle hit an IED, resulting in his death along with at least six other soldiers.

Lt. Col. Sani Uba, spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai, confirmed the attack, stating that troops had previously repelled the insurgents after intense gunfire.

Lt. Col. Uba praised the late officer, describing him as courageous and selfless for personally assessing the frontline situation.

He emphasized that Col. Mohammed’s actions reflected “the highest traditions of military leadership,” showing courage, duty, and commitment to his troops.

This tragedy follows a deadly assault in Benisheikh, where a Brigade Commander and at least 17 soldiers were killed, underscoring the ongoing insurgent violence in the region.

The military has expressed deep sorrow, calling the fallen personnel heroes who gave their lives in service to the nation.
