US Charges Sinaloa Governor with Drug Trafficking Allegations

April 29, 2026 —
The US Justice Department has filed charges against the governor of Sinaloa, Mexico, and several other officials for alleged drug trafficking activities.
Governor Ruben Rocha Moya, along with 10 other officials, is accused of collaborating with the notorious Sinaloa cartel to smuggle vast quantities of narcotics into the United States, according to the US attorney for the Southern District of New York.
The Mexican Foreign Ministry has confirmed it received requests for the extradition of several individuals but has not disclosed their identities.
Governor Rocha Moya, however, has fiercely denied these allegations, calling them “categorically and absolutely false” in a statement shared on X.
In his response, Rocha Moya emphasized that the charges were part of a broader attack against Mexico’s current governing party, Morena, which has been in power since 2018.
“This isn’t just an attack on me but an attack on the Fourth Transformation,” Rocha stated.
Rocha Moya has been the governor of Sinaloa since 2021, a state deeply affected by violent cartel activity.
The Sinaloa cartel, one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world, has been involved in a violent conflict between its factions, which has resulted in the deaths of thousands.
Among those accused alongside Rocha Moya are a senator from the Morena party, the mayor of Culiacan (Sinaloa’s capital), and a vice prosecutor in the state attorney general’s office.
The Sinaloa cartel has long been one of the six Mexican drug trafficking organizations that the US government has labeled foreign terrorist organizations.
