Atletico Madrid, Arsenal Play Out Tense 1-1 Draw in UCL Semi-Final

April 29, 2026 — Madrid —
Atletico Madrid and Arsenal traded penalties in a gripping 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday.
Viktor Gyokeres gave Arsenal the lead just before the break, converting a penalty after being fouled in the box.
However, Atletico responded in the second half when Julian Alvarez scored from the penalty spot after Ben White handled the ball.
Arsenal were frustrated by a late penalty decision being overturned following a VAR review, after David Hancko made contact with Eberechi Eze in the area.
Despite long spells of Atletico dominance, Arsenal’s solid defending meant they left Madrid with a strong chance to reach the final, 20 years after their last appearance.
Atletico captain Koke praised his team’s second-half performance, saying, “We were the team we have to be, if we play at this level we can win.”
He added, “From my point of view, they didn’t create much danger against us… the team defended well, and they just had that penalty.”
The match lacked the goal fest seen in PSG’s dramatic 5-4 victory over Bayern Munich the night before but made up for it with tension and a fierce battle.
Atletico, known for their outdated defensive reputation, pressed Arsenal hard early on, with David Raya saving a shot from Alvarez.
Arsenal, a long way from manager Mikel Arteta’s pre-match demand to dominate, looked to counter-attack with Noni Madueke, who fired a shot just wide.
The Gunners took the lead when Gyokeres won a penalty after being fouled by Hancko. Gyokeres converted confidently, sending it past Jan Oblak.
In the second half, Atletico came out firing, and after White’s handball, Alvarez equalized with a powerful penalty.
Despite Atletico’s sustained pressure, including a close call when Antoine Griezmann’s shot hit the crossbar, the score remained level.
Arsenal thought they had earned a second penalty after Eze went down under a challenge from Hancko, but VAR overturned the decision, ruling minimal contact.
Both teams now look to the second leg in London next week, with Arsenal still in a strong position to make it to the final.
