NYSC Urges INEC to Improve Welfare of Corps Members for 2027 Elections

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance the welfare of corps members serving as ad hoc staff during elections.

Nafiu also urged prompt payment of insurance benefits and medical support for corps members who are injured or lose their lives while on election duty.

He made the appeal during a visit by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, to the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.

According to Nafiu, better welfare packages would motivate corps members to serve with commitment and professionalism during electoral assignments.

He also requested that INEC release the names of selected corps members early to allow sufficient preparation before election days.

The NYSC chief commended INEC for its collaboration since 1999 and noted that a formal Memorandum of Understanding has guided both institutions since 2011, renewed several times.

Describing corps members as competent, neutral, and digitally skilled, Nafiu said they have the capacity to ensure credible elections.

He praised INEC’s security measures during the recent Anambra State governorship election and urged that similar arrangements continue for future polls.

“We have adequate manpower in corps members to support INEC for the 2027 general elections and upcoming off-cycle polls this year. We are fully ready,” Nafiu said.

He clarified that NYSC insurance does not cover election duties, which rely on coverage arranged by INEC.

Nafiu called on Ministries, Departments and Agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to assist INEC in conducting successful elections.

“I assure you that NYSC is committed to sustaining this collaboration to support credible elections and the development of Nigeria,” he added.

Preparations are ongoing across the country for the 2027 general elections and other off-cycle polls.
