Fayemi Claims Role in Tinubu’s 2023 Victory, Calls Peter Obi a ‘Phenomenon’

Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has disclosed that he played a part in helping President Bola Ahmed Tinubu win the 2023 presidential election, while describing former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi as a political “phenomenon.”
During an interview on the State Affairs podcast hosted by Edmund Obilo, Fayemi reflected on the 2023 elections and evolving trends in Nigerian politics.
He noted that Obi’s rise disrupted the traditional political order and reflected growing public dissatisfaction with mainstream parties.
Fayemi also admitted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has strayed from the principles on which it was founded.
“I helped Tinubu become president, but the APC has lost its bearing, and Peter Obi is a phenomenon,” he said.
The former governor criticized Nigeria’s winner-takes-all political system, cautioning that excluding large segments of the population from governance could undermine national stability.
He advocated for more inclusive politics, transparent party primaries, and restructuring of the federation to strengthen democracy and unity.
Fayemi’s remarks add to internal critiques within the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections, as debates over reforms, party alliances, and the future direction of the ruling party intensify.
Polity Reporters will continue to provide updates on Nigerian politics and the 2027 elections.
