Atiku Appoints Kenneth Okonkwo as Spokesperson

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain and actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his official spokesperson, following internal party discussions around the ADC’s 2027 general election arrangements and recent disagreements over the choice of running mate.
Okonkwo confirmed the appointment in a statement shared on Thursday via his verified X account, where he expressed appreciation to Atiku for the confidence placed in him.
“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his Spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me,” he said.
He described the development as evidence of Atiku’s conciliatory approach to leadership, noting that the former Vice President prefers dialogue over confrontation when disagreements arise within the party.
“Rather than pick offence against any of his associates for expressing genuine reservations of any action taken, HE AA always opts for dialogue and compromise that will engender solution to problems,” Okonkwo stated.
Okonkwo further disclosed that consultations involving Atiku and other ADC stakeholders had addressed concerns relating to the South-East geopolitical zone, despite constraints linked to the Electoral Act, 2026.
“At a dialogue with HE AA and other well-meaning members of the African Democratic Congress, the interests of the South-East have been discussed and guaranteed within the existing challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026, and the realities on the ground,” he added.
He also acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka, in strengthening internal party cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.
The appointment comes shortly after Okonkwo publicly criticised reports suggesting that the ADC had settled on a South-South running mate, warning that such a move would worsen the perceived political exclusion of the South-East, which he said had not produced either a president or vice president since 1999.
The ADC has since confirmed former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election, following Atiku’s emergence as the party’s presidential candidate at its national primary.
Okonkwo concluded by appreciating his family, supporters, and well-wishers for their encouragement and prayers.
