Couple Arrested After Empire State Climb for Dramatic Proposal Stunt

Two individuals were arrested on Wednesday after breaching security and scaling the antenna at the top of the iconic Empire State Building in New York City in what appeared to be a planned wedding proposal stunt.
The pair, identified as Russian “roof-toppers” Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, reportedly carried out the act while dressed in all-black clothing with their faces fully covered.
After reaching the summit of the 1,454-foot (443-metre) skyscraper, the couple displayed a large banner bearing the message, “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”
Authorities said the banner was later recovered, while an NYPD helicopter was deployed to the scene and the building’s observation deck was evacuated as security operatives responded.
A spokesperson for the New York Police Department confirmed that both individuals were taken into custody without incident, adding that no injuries were recorded.
“Two individuals were taken into custody without incident. There are no injuries reported. Charges are pending, and the investigation is still ongoing,” the spokesperson said, according to agency report AFP.
