Arsenal, City Get UCL Giants
The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase draw has produced blockbuster fixtures, with Arsenal set to host 15-time European champions Real Madrid, while Manchester City and Aston Villa will face defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The draw, conducted in Monaco, revealed the opponents for all 36 clubs competing in the revamped league phase of Europe’s elite club competition, with several heavyweight clashes expected when the tournament begins in September.
Arsenal were handed one of the toughest schedules, with Mikel Arteta’s side drawn against Real Madrid at the Emirates Stadium, while they will also face Bayern Munich away from home during the league phase.
The Gunners, who reached last season’s Champions League final before losing to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties, will also take on Borussia Dortmund, Real Betis, Lille, Napoli, Sabah and Slavia Prague as they battle for a place among the top eight teams that qualify directly for the knockout stage.
Manchester City will welcome reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain to the Etihad Stadium in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the league phase, while Maresca’s side will also travel to face Barcelona in a reunion encounter involving former City midfielder Rodri, who moved to the Spanish club.
City’s remaining opponents include Napoli, Sporting CP, Porto, RB Leipzig, AEK Athens and Lens, giving the Premier League side another challenging European campaign as they seek to reclaim the Champions League title.
Aston Villa, returning to the Champions League after an absence, were also handed a difficult draw, with Unai Emery’s team set to host PSG and Borussia Dortmund while travelling to Barcelona and Galatasaray.
Villa will also face Club Brugge, Fenerbahçe, Viking and Slavia Prague as they attempt to make a strong return to Europe’s top competition.
The 2026/27 Champions League continues with the league phase format, where each of the 36 participating teams will play eight matches against different opponents, with four fixtures at home and four away.
The top eight teams in the league table will automatically advance to the Round of 16, while teams finishing between ninth and 24th will enter a play-off round for the remaining knockout spots.
The league phase is scheduled to begin from September 8 to 10, 2026, with matches continuing until January 2027 before the knockout rounds begin.
The Champions League final is scheduled to take place at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on June 5, 2027, as Europe’s biggest clubs battle for the continent’s most prestigious trophy.
