FG Rehabilitates Police Schools

The Federal Government has awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions across Nigeria as part of efforts to improve the capacity, infrastructure and operational readiness of the Nigeria Police Force.

The development was disclosed after the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where members received updates on the state of police training facilities nationwide.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who briefed journalists after the NEC meeting, said contracts had already been awarded for the rehabilitation of the 13 institutions, adding that about 80 per cent of contractors involved had received their award letters.

Aiyedatiwa explained that the rehabilitation programme would be completed within three weeks, with the primary objective of restoring the institutions to suitable conditions ahead of the commencement of police training programmes.

He said the council received updates on the need to urgently improve police training infrastructure, stressing that effective policing requires properly trained personnel equipped with modern facilities and adequate learning environments.

The governor noted that although discussions around state policing were ongoing, there remained a national responsibility to maintain minimum standards for police training and professionalism across the country.

He said improved training institutions would help prepare police officers for emerging security challenges, especially as Nigeria continues to battle terrorism, kidnapping, banditry and other forms of criminality.

The Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ossai, also disclosed that the Minister of Finance had assured the council that funds required for payment to contractors would be released, allowing the rehabilitation work to proceed without delays.

Ossai stressed that the programme would not be a one-off intervention, saying the government intended to sustain police training and retraining initiatives to improve the quality of security personnel across the country.

He urged Nigerians to support security agencies by providing useful information and collaborating with law enforcement officers, noting that effective security requires cooperation between trained personnel and the communities they serve.

The rehabilitation exercise comes amid renewed efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture through improved manpower development, recruitment and capacity building within security institutions.

The government said upgrading police training facilities would provide officers with better infrastructure and equipment needed to meet the demands of modern policing and national security operations.
