US Firm Questions Tinubu Embassy Letter

A United States-based political advisory and lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, has questioned the authenticity of a letter purportedly issued by the US Embassy in Nigeria praising President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in tackling insecurity.
The firm alleged in a statement posted on its verified X account on Wednesday that Tinubu and his associates may have forged the document, which was referenced by Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico, Reno Omokri, while defending the President over questions surrounding his past records in the United States.
Von Batten-Montague-York said the letter contained several spelling, grammatical and formatting errors that it claimed were inconsistent with official US government correspondence.
The firm pointed to errors including “czheck” instead of “check,” “maitatins” instead of “maintains,” and the use of “it’s territories” instead of “its territories.” It also faulted the sentence “The result of the checks were negative,” saying it should read “The result of the check was negative.”
Other issues raised included phrases such as “nor information of your department” and “contact me direct,” which the firm said should have been written differently.
The controversy comes amid renewed attention on Tinubu’s historical records in the United States following a legal battle over access to documents held by US federal agencies.
Omokri had argued that Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) records linked to Tinubu should not automatically be interpreted as criminal records and had referenced the purported letter as part of his defence.
The firm, however, urged independent verification of the document, warning that presenting a fabricated document as an official US government communication could have legal consequences under American law.
“Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and his associates are, as expected, spreading stories and documents to cloud the matter,” the firm said, adding that the alleged errors made it difficult to accept the letter as genuine without further verification.
