2027: Obi, Makinde call for unity to rescue Nigeria from poverty, hunger, insecurity

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, have called on Nigerians and political leaders to unite in the collective effort to rebuild the country and address challenges of poverty, hunger and insecurity ahead of the 2027 general election.

Obi made the call on Monday during the commissioning of Makinde’s 2027 presidential campaign office in Abuja, where he attended in solidarity with the Oyo State governor’s presidential ambition.

The former Anambra State governor described Makinde as qualified to contest for the presidency, stressing that Nigeria’s future should not be defined by political rivalry but by collective commitment to improving the lives of citizens.

Obi said the country needed a new political culture where leaders put national interest above personal ambitions, adding that whoever emerges victorious through a free, fair and credible electoral process should receive the support of Nigerians to move the nation forward.

“What we are doing today is to show you that, for us, we don’t have desperation. We want the people of Nigeria to make their choice. Whoever they choose, all of us will come together to build a new Nigeria,” Obi said.

He lamented the current realities confronting Nigerians, noting that many citizens are struggling with hunger, poverty and insecurity, while urging political actors to shift attention from disagreements to finding solutions to the nation’s challenges.

“We can’t all continue the way we are going today. Our people are hungry. Our people are poor. Our people are insecure,” Obi stated, adding that the priority of political leaders should be improving the welfare of Nigerians.

He further called for politics that focuses on providing opportunities for ordinary Nigerians, saying the country should become a place where every child, regardless of background, can achieve success through merit and opportunity.

Obi’s appearance at the event came as political activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election continue to intensify, with opposition figures exploring alliances and presenting different visions for Nigeria’s future.

Makinde, who has declared his intention to contest the presidency under the APM platform, has repeatedly emphasized the need for competent leadership, economic reforms, improved security and effective governance as part of his agenda for Nigeria.

Earlier, both leaders had also expressed concerns over the country’s leadership challenges, arguing that Nigeria’s problems were not due to a lack of resources or capable citizens but the need for stronger leadership focused on service and national development.

The development adds another layer to the political realignment ahead of the 2027 election, as presidential contenders continue to seek support and promote their visions for addressing Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
