WHO Gives Update on Nigeria’s Ebola Situation

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, has announced that Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of an infected patient and her husband to Switzerland.
Janabi disclosed this on Monday in a statement on his official X handle, noting that Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts, while Swiss authorities would assume responsibility for the patient’s treatment and the follow-up of her husband, identified as contact number 53.
He said the evacuation took place earlier in the day and confirmed that both individuals were Swiss citizens.
According to Janabi, the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical teams successfully managed the acute phase of her illness and stabilised her condition before the transfer.
He commended the Federal Government, healthcare workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners involved in the response, describing their efforts as a significant public health achievement.
Janabi argued that the successful management of the case demonstrated Africa’s expertise, resilience and leadership in public health, particularly when countries collaborated to confront health emergencies.
Despite the development, the WHO regional director stressed that continued vigilance remained essential, with particular emphasis on contact tracing, monitoring and other public health measures.
He reiterated that Nigerian health authorities would maintain close surveillance of the 52 contacts in the country, while Switzerland would oversee the patient’s continued care and monitor her husband.
