Tinubu Appoints Bianca Ojukwu as Foreign Affairs Minister

April 29, 2026 — Abuja, Nigeria —
President Bola Tinubu has appointed Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs.
This appointment follows the resignation of Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who stepped down ahead of his planned political move for the 2027 elections.
Additionally, President Tinubu nominated Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, pending Senate confirmation.
A statement from presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, announced these changes on Wednesday.
The president said the adjustments were made to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts and align foreign policy with the administration’s economic goals.
“These changes are part of a wider effort to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy for greater efficiency, strategic engagement, and stronger global partnerships,” the statement said.
Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu, a seasoned diplomat and former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, takes over leadership of Nigeria’s external relations.
Polity Reporters reports that her appointment comes as the government focuses on economic diplomacy, regional stability, and expanded international cooperation.
The presidency placed premium on her extensive experience in international affairs.
“Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu brings decades of diplomatic experience and a deep understanding of Nigeria’s global relations,” the statement noted.
Ambassador Enikanolaiye, who previously served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs, is also a career diplomat, having served in key diplomatic missions in cities like Addis Ababa, London, Ottawa, Belgrade, and New Delhi.
His nomination, the statement added, is part of efforts to ensure continuity in Nigeria’s foreign service.
“Ambassador Enikanolaiye’s vast experience in multiple diplomatic roles will support Nigeria’s evolving foreign policy objectives,” the statement concluded.
President Tinubu congratulated both appointees and urged them to prioritize the nation’s interest, enhance economic diplomacy, and improve the welfare of Nigerians abroad.
