Datti Baba-Ahmed Questions Peter Obi’s Northern Support

Former vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed has expressed doubts about Peter Obi gaining strong support from Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a recent interview, Datti said it is “very unlikely” that the North would rally behind Obi, although he stressed that his view reflects his personal opinion.
He added that he continues to hold “an excellent relationship and much respect” for key political actors.
Datti disclosed that he had previously advised Obi to begin building strategic alliances well ahead of the next election cycle.
He recalled telling Obi on January 31, 2024, to consider engaging influential Northern figures such as Rabiu Kwankwaso and Nasir El-Rufai.
According to him, early political planning is essential for success, noting that failure to prepare years in advance raises concerns about long-term strategy.
He maintained that his recommendation was based on positioning for 2027.
While acknowledging Obi’s current political moves, including his growing alignment with Kwankwaso, Datti questioned the strength and effectiveness of such a partnership.
“Will it work? It’s a big question. We’ll wait and see,” he remarked.
He also appeared critical of Obi’s approach to internal party challenges, arguing that a candidate who secured the Labour Party ticket should have remained committed to resolving its internal crises rather than stepping away.
