Atiku Urges ADC to Prioritise Competence over Social Media Popularity in Presidential Choice

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on delegates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to focus on competence, experience, and national appeal when selecting the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku cautioned against choosing a flag bearer based solely on social media popularity or public excitement.

He argued that Nigeria’s current economic and security challenges demand a leader with proven governance skills rather than what he termed “political experimentation.”

“This is not a season for political experimentation. Nigeria cannot afford a learning-on-the-job presidency,” Atiku said, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in leadership.

He highlighted that electoral success is built on strong political structures, strategic planning, and experience, not digital trends or online hype.

“Elections are not won on social media enthusiasm alone. Governance is not performance art. The presidency is not a platform for improvisation,” he added.

Atiku further insisted that the ADC should present its “strongest, most credible, and most prepared candidate” who can govern effectively from the first day in office.

He emphasized that the country requires leadership capable of addressing economic recovery, insecurity, institutional reform, and fostering national unity amidst growing hardship and public dissatisfaction.

The former vice president also noted that the next Nigerian leader must bring experience in governance, crisis management, coalition building, and economic development to the table.
