2027 Presidency: Kwankwaso Reveals Secret Deal With Obi

Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has confirmed that he reached an agreement with Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, over a one term presidency arrangement ahead of the 2027 general election.

Kwankwaso disclosed that the agreement was based on the understanding that the presidency would move to the South for a single four year term before returning to the North after the completion of that tenure.

The former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party said the arrangement was reached after consultations with political stakeholders, adding that Obi was considered suitable because of his credibility, competence and ability to unite Nigerians across ethnic and religious divides.

According to Kwankwaso, the proposed alliance was built around the belief that Nigeria requires quality leadership rather than a strict focus on regional interests, stressing that fairness and justice would guide the partnership.

The development comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with opposition figures exploring alliances aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Kwankwaso had earlier been linked with a possible presidential ticket alongside Obi, with both politicians holding discussions as part of broader opposition coalition efforts.

Obi, who recently affirmed Kwankwaso as his running mate in the emerging political arrangement, said the former Kano governor would not be treated as a ceremonial deputy if they succeed at the polls.

However, the proposed arrangement has continued to generate debate among political analysts, especially over whether a president who is constitutionally eligible for two terms can voluntarily step aside after only one tenure.
