Court Sends Ansaru Leaders to Life Imprisonment

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced two senior commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group, Mahmud Usman and Abubakar Abba, to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to multiple terrorism related offences.

Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the judgment on Monday after the two convicts admitted guilt to a 32 count charge filed against them by the Federal Government through the Department of State Services (DSS).

Usman, also known by aliases including Abu Bara’a, Abbas and Mukhtar, was identified as the self styled Emir of Ansaru, while Abba, also known as Abu Bara and Mahmud al Nigeri, was described as his deputy and chief of staff within the terrorist organisation.

The charges against the duo bordered on terrorism, kidnapping for ransom, terrorism financing, illegal mining, possession and manufacture of improvised explosive devices, among other offences.

The court sentenced the two men to life imprisonment on two major counts, while also imposing additional 20 year jail terms on other counts contained in the charge, with the sentences taking effect from the date of their arrest.

The DSS had earlier announced the arrest of the two Ansaru commanders following separate intelligence led operations carried out between May and July 2025.

Ansaru, a faction that broke away from Boko Haram, has been linked by security agencies to several violent attacks, kidnappings and terrorist activities in Nigeria.

The conviction marks one of the major terrorism related judgments secured by Nigerian authorities against senior figures of the group, as security agencies continue efforts to dismantle extremist networks operating in different parts of the country.

However, the DSS has indicated plans to appeal the sentence, arguing that the punishment handed down by the court was not severe enough considering the alleged crimes attributed to the convicts.
