Trump Praises Tinubu’s Security Efforts, Vows Stronger US Support Against Terrorism

United States President Donald Trump has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as decisive leadership in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and insecurity, particularly violence affecting Christian communities.

The commendation was contained in a letter dated July 6, 2026, which was made public by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Trump said he appreciated Tinubu’s leadership and commitment to addressing security challenges confronting Nigeria, while reaffirming the United States’ willingness to strengthen cooperation with Abuja in combating terrorism.

The former US President’s remarks came amid renewed discussions between Nigeria and the United States over security cooperation, intelligence sharing and efforts to tackle extremist groups operating in parts of the country.

Trump specifically highlighted concerns over attacks affecting Christian communities, a subject that has previously generated debate over the nature and causes of insecurity in Nigeria.

The Nigerian government has maintained that insecurity affects citizens across religious and ethnic lines and that security operations are focused on confronting all forms of violent extremism.

The statement comes as both countries continue discussions aimed at improving counterterrorism cooperation and strengthening regional security efforts in West Africa.

The Presidency described Trump’s message as recognition of Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability in areas affected by terrorism and violent crimes.
