NNPP Warns Obi Against Choosing Kwankwaso as Running Mate
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has warned the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against selecting Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate ahead of the 2027 election.
The party alleged that Kwankwaso could eventually turn against the NDC, with reference to his political differences with the NNPP after contesting the 2023 presidential election on its platform.
NNPP National Secretary-General, Ogini Olaposi, described Obi’s reported choice of Kwankwaso as a “gross mistake,” urging the NDC to consider the former Kano State governor’s political history before finalising its decision.
Olaposi alleged that Kwankwaso turned against the NNPP despite the opportunity the party provided him to contest the 2023 presidential election, warning that a similar situation could happen within the NDC.
“This is why political parties must be careful of who they choose as running mates and flag bearers,” he said.
The NNPP chieftain claimed that Kwankwaso’s actions contributed to internal disagreements within the party and the exit of some members after the 2023 election.
He also dismissed claims that the NNPP was handed over to Kwankwaso by the party’s founder, Dr Boniface Aniebonam, describing such claims as “preposterous and unthinkable.”
Olaposi further argued that Obi’s popularity alone would not guarantee victory for the NDC in 2027, insisting that voters would also consider the political record and antecedents of his potential running mate.
