Bala Mohammed Leaves PDP, Defects to APM

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
The governor made the announcement on Saturday at the Government House in Bauchi, ending weeks of speculation about his political future.
His defection comes amid a leadership crisis within the PDP, which has caused deep divisions within the party.
Governor Mohammed had previously called the PDP “headless” and expressed his desire to explore other political platforms.
Reacting to the recent Supreme Court judgment on the PDP leadership dispute, Mohammed pointed out that neither his faction, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), nor the group loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had achieved a clear victory.
“We have succeeded in ensuring that no single individual hijacks the party,” he said, adding, “As democrats who respect the rule of law, we accept the judgment. But it is not a victory for anyone.”
He further stated that the PDP’s Board of Trustees would temporarily oversee the party’s affairs, pending the formation of a caretaker committee.
Governor Mohammed also accused Minister Wike and his allies of working against the PDP’s interests, claiming that they have ties with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Explaining his defection to the APM, the governor said his decision was aimed at securing a more stable political platform for his supporters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Our hearts remain with the PDP, but politically we must move forward,” he remarked.
Governor Mohammed also revealed his intention to contest the Bauchi South Senatorial District seat in 2027, noting that his defection followed extensive consultations with other political parties.
His move is expected to significantly affect the PDP’s strength in the North-East region and could spark further realignments as political figures prepare for the 2027 elections.
