Keir Starmer resigns as UK Prime Minister, backs Andy Burnham as successor

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has resigned from office after about two years as the country’s leader, formally ending his tenure and paving the way for Andy Burnham to take over as his successor.

Starmer tendered his resignation to King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, following growing pressure within the Labour Party and concerns over the party’s political direction ahead of future elections.

The former Prime Minister, who led Labour to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election, said he accepted the decision of his parliamentary colleagues and expressed confidence that the party would continue to serve the interests of the British people.

Starmer’s resignation came after weeks of internal party pressure, with some Labour lawmakers questioning whether he remained the best person to lead the party into the next general election.

Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, subsequently became the new Labour leader and was invited by King Charles III to form a government, becoming the United Kingdom’s seventh Prime Minister in a decade.

Burnham entered Downing Street promising a new direction for the country, including a long-term strategy focused on economic recovery, improving public services, tackling the cost of living crisis and restoring political stability.

In his first address as Prime Minister, Burnham pledged what he described as a new approach to governance, promising to decentralise power and deliver reforms aimed at improving the lives of ordinary Britons.

Starmer’s departure marks one of the fastest changes of leadership in recent British political history, with Burnham becoming the latest Prime Minister in a period marked by repeated changes at the top of government.

The transition also triggered changes within the government, with several senior officials adjusting their roles as Burnham formed his cabinet and set out his administration’s priorities.

Political observers say Burnham’s biggest challenge will be rebuilding public confidence, managing economic pressures and uniting a Labour Party that has experienced internal divisions since returning to power.

Starmer, while leaving office, maintained that his government had made significant progress during its time in power and wished his successor success as he takes responsibility for leading Britain.

The change of leadership is expected to reshape Britain’s political landscape as Burnham begins his premiership and opposition parties prepare to challenge the new Labour administration.
