2027 Race: Kwankwaso Reveals Unusual Security Plan

Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has said a government led by him and Peter Obi would be willing to engage all groups, including terrorists and criminals, as part of efforts to end insecurity in Nigeria.
Kwankwaso, who is expected to serve as Obi’s running mate in the proposed opposition alliance, made the statement while discussing their security strategy and approach to tackling the country’s prolonged security challenges.
The former governor said the priority of their administration would be to restore peace and protect Nigerians, adding that achieving lasting security would require exploring every possible option.
According to him, while security agencies would continue to confront criminal elements, dialogue would also be considered where necessary to understand grievances and find lasting solutions.
“We will talk to everybody, including terrorists, because our responsibility is to bring peace and security to Nigeria,” Kwankwaso was quoted as saying.
He, however, stressed that engaging with criminal groups would not mean surrendering to them or abandoning the responsibility of government to enforce law and order.
The comments come amid ongoing debates over the best approach to tackling insecurity in Nigeria, where communities across several states have suffered attacks, kidnappings, banditry and terrorism.
Successive governments have adopted a combination of military operations, intelligence gathering, negotiations and amnesty programmes in attempts to address security threats.
Kwankwaso’s remarks have already generated reactions among Nigerians, with supporters describing dialogue as a possible pathway to peace, while critics questioned whether negotiations with terrorists could weaken the fight against criminal organisations.
The statement comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition figures exploring alliances aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Kwankwaso and Obi have continued to highlight security, economic recovery and governance reforms as key areas they intend to prioritise if elected.
