A retired Nigerian Army general has called for an upward review of soldiers’ salaries, insisting that the least paid military personnel should earn at least N250,000 monthly to reflect the risks, sacrifices and economic realities associated with military service.

The retired officer’s position comes amid renewed calls from military veterans and stakeholders for improved welfare packages for serving personnel, with concerns that current earnings do not adequately match the demands placed on troops battling terrorism, banditry and other security threats across the country.

The call for a N250,000 minimum salary has also been backed by military veterans, who recently demanded the implementation of what they described as an approved upward review of military pay, arguing that Nigerian soldiers deserve better remuneration compared with their counterparts in some other African countries.

The veterans said a review of military salaries was necessary after comparative assessments showed that Nigeria’s military pay structure lagged behind those of several African nations, adding that the National Assembly had considered a new salary framework for personnel.

They argued that improved salaries would boost troop morale, strengthen commitment and help attract and retain capable personnel within the armed forces at a time when the military is facing increasing operational responsibilities.

The demand comes as Nigerian soldiers continue to operate in challenging environments, including counterterrorism operations in the North East, anti banditry campaigns in the North West and other security missions across the country.

Security experts have repeatedly stressed that effective military operations require not only weapons, equipment and manpower but also a well motivated force whose welfare is prioritised.

The retired general’s recommendation adds to ongoing conversations around military reforms, including better pay, improved allowances, enhanced accommodation and stronger support systems for personnel and their families.

The Nigerian military has in recent years received increased attention from the government through recruitment drives, equipment upgrades and structural reforms aimed at strengthening its capacity to respond to emerging security threats.

Stakeholders, however, maintain that welfare remains a key component of military effectiveness, arguing that soldiers who risk their lives in defence of the nation should receive compensation that reflects their sacrifices.
