2027: INEC Introduces Tracker

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to introduce a real-time tracker to monitor its preparations for the 2027 General Election across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Monday during a two-day strategic workshop for Administrative Secretaries at the Marriott Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos.

Amupitan said the workshop would develop a standard Excel-based operational tracker for Administrative Secretaries, which would be linked to the commission’s Election Monitoring and Support Centre dashboard and Election Project Plan.

He explained that the commission previously lacked a uniform system for monitoring the operational responsibilities of Administrative Secretaries.

According to him, the new system would provide Resident Electoral Commissioners, Supervising National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission and INEC headquarters with real-time updates on the distribution of election materials, training of ad hoc staff and overall preparedness in each state.

“This will enable us to move from reactive responses to proactive management,” he said.

The INEC chairman added that the tracker would remain part of the commission’s operational framework beyond the 2027 election, particularly for monitoring and onboarding Administrative Secretaries.

He noted that the initiative was being introduced as the National Register of Voters approaches 100 million registered voters.

The workshop is focused on five key areas, including Continuous Voter Registration, logistics and materials management, electoral technology, optimisation of ad hoc staff and financial compliance.

Amupitan said INEC was applying lessons from recent off-cycle elections, including the Osun State governorship election, where he noted that logistics and technology performed effectively.

He said the commission was working to replicate the same level of efficiency nationwide ahead of the 2027 general election.
