Fayemi Compares Atiku’s Subsidy Plan to APC’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket

Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has described Atiku Abubakar’s promise to restore fuel subsidy as a political strategy similar to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2023 election.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Fayemi said Atiku’s proposal was designed to appeal to Nigerians affected by the hardship that followed the removal of fuel subsidy by the Tinubu administration.

Atiku, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, had pledged to reinstate fuel subsidy if elected president in 2027.

Fayemi, however, argued that the proposal was more of a political calculation than an economic solution, saying it could attract voters who have suffered from the impact of subsidy removal.

“Frankly, my take on that is that Atiku’s proposal on subsidy is the political equivalent of our own Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2023. It is a political strategy. It’s not an economic construct,” Fayemi said.

The former governor maintained that he remained an advocate of fuel subsidy removal, noting that the decision was part of efforts that began before President Bola Tinubu assumed office.

He, however, criticised the manner in which the policy was implemented, arguing that stronger measures should have been put in place to protect vulnerable Nigerians.

Fayemi said the Nigerian Governors’ Forum had previously worked with the Federal Government and the World Bank to develop a safety net strategy aimed at cushioning the effects of subsidy removal.

He added that just as the APC used the Muslim-Muslim ticket as a political strategy to maximise votes in 2023, opposition candidates were also seeking to leverage public dissatisfaction with the subsidy removal ahead of the 2027 election.
