Court Restricts Police, FRSC from Imposing Fines on Third-Party Insurance

A federal high court in Abuja has ruled that the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) do not have the authority to impose fines on motorists for lacking third-party motor insurance unless directed by a court order.
Justice Hauwa Yilwa made the ruling after reviewing a case brought by activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju against the inspector-general of police (IGP), the attorney-general of the federation (AGF), and the FRSC.
The lawsuit, identified as FHC/ABJ/CS/291/2025, aimed to clarify the legal boundaries of law enforcement agencies in ensuring compliance with vehicle insurance regulations.
