BREAKING: Court Sets Date for Hearing on Suit to Deregister ADC, Other Parties

A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled May 5 for the hearing of a suit aimed at compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other political parties due to alleged breaches of constitutional requirements.
The matter was adjourned by Justice Peter Lifu.
He granted the plaintiffs, the National Forum of Former Legislators, permission to amend their processes and add more parties accused of violating legal provisions.
The suit also includes the Accord Party, Zenith Labour Party, and Action Alliance as defendants, alongside INEC and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
Justice Lifu emphasized the urgency of the case, given its significance to public interest and the upcoming 2027 general elections.
He directed all parties yet to respond to the amended suit to do so promptly and ordered that filings be completed by May 1.
The plaintiffs, led by Igbokwe Nnanna, argue that the accused parties have failed to meet crucial constitutional thresholds for continued registration.
This includes securing 25 percent of votes in at least one state during presidential elections and maintaining nationwide representation.
They are seeking a court order to compel INEC to deregister the parties until they fulfill the legal requirements.
They warn that allowing them to contest in the 2027 elections could complicate the process, overcrowd the ballot papers, and strain administrative resources.
The court will reconvene on May 5 for the substantive hearing of the suit.
