2027: Tinubu Orders Ayade to Step Down from Senate Race

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed former Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade, to withdraw from the 2027 Senate race for the Cross River North Senatorial District seat.
In an emotional statement released on Monday, Ayade revealed that he had been invited to Abuja for a high-level consultation with the Presidency.
After the meeting, it became clear that the President wanted him to shelve his senatorial ambition.
“I yield to his request even as I pour tears of ill treatment and agony,” Ayade said.
The former governor, who served two terms as governor and previously held a senate seat, made a highlight of his significant contributions to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-South region.
He recalled being the first APC governor in the South-South and playing a pivotal role in building the party’s structure in Cross River State.
Ayade also noted his performance in the 2023 presidential election, where he secured nearly 40,000 more votes than the PDP in the state, marking a historic achievement.
He reminded President Tinubu of his early support, emphasizing that he was the first APC governor to back Tinubu as the party’s presidential candidate for 2023.
Ayade also popularized the slogan: “If Tinubu Can Fix Lagos, Tinubu Can Fix Nigeria.”
Despite his contributions, Ayade stated that he has been sidelined for over three years without a federal appointment.
He is currently running a free transportation scheme in support of the President’s expected 2027 re-election bid.
Ayade appealed to President Tinubu to reconsider the order, arguing that his federal constituency has only had eight years of senatorial representation, while his main opponent has had 20 years.
He warned that granting his opponent another term would result in a fourth consecutive term in the National Assembly.
