Federal High Court Nullifies INEC’s 2027 Election Timetable

The Federal High Court in Abuja has voided the 2027 election timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Justice Mohammed Umar delivered the judgment in a suit filed by the Youth Party, ruling that INEC’s timetable imposed restrictive deadlines on political parties for primaries and other pre-election activities in violation of the Electoral Act, 2026.

The judge stated that INEC lacked the statutory authority to fix or prescribe the timeframe within which political parties must conduct primaries for the nomination of candidates for the 2027 general elections.

The Youth Party, as the sole plaintiff in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/517/2026, filed the originating summons on March 11, 2026, seeking six reliefs.

Justice Umar granted all six reliefs sought by the plaintiff.

The court declared that INEC cannot lawfully abridge or restrict statutory periods under the Electoral Act relating to submission of personal particulars of candidates, withdrawals, substitutions, and other election procedures.

Consequently, Justice Umar set aside portions of INEC’s Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 general elections that imposed timelines inconsistent with the Electoral Act, 2026.
