El-Rufai’s Wife Seeks N2bn in Legal Action Against ICPC Over Alleged Defamation

Aichatou El-Rufai, wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has issued a pre-action notice to the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), demanding N2 billion in damages for allegedly defamatory statements.
The notice follows a recent ICPC press release titled “Clarification on the Access Control Protocol at ICPC Headquarters, Abuja,” published on May 18, 2026, which her legal team claims contained false and damaging statements that harmed her reputation.
Her lawyers argue that several portions of the ICPC statement, signed by spokesperson Okor Odey, were inaccurate and misleading.
The legal team specifically disputed the characterization of Mrs El-Rufai as “a woman who identified herself as the wife of a defendant,” claiming it questioned her legal status as the former governor’s wife.
They also contested the ICPC’s description of her earlier claims as “false and misleading,” saying the remarks were defamatory and negatively affected her public image and credibility.
The lawyers further rejected allegations suggesting that she violated visitation protocols at the commission’s headquarters, insisting such claims misrepresented her respect for official procedures.
They also disputed suggestions that she made inconsistent statements regarding claims that her husband was denied food while in custody, arguing that these remarks undermined her integrity.
The suit represents the latest development in a continuing dispute between the ICPC and members of the El-Rufai family.
