FULL LIST: 16 Players of Nigerian Heritage to Feature at 2026 World Cup

Despite failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria’s football influence will remain visible at the tournament starting June 11 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The Super Eagles missed out after a playoff defeat to DR Congo on penalties, marking consecutive absences following their failure to qualify for Qatar 2022.

As the expanded 48-team tournament begins, roughly 15 to 16 players with Nigerian roots—by birth, parentage, or ancestry—are expected to participate across various national teams.

This diaspora presence demonstrates the depth of Nigerian football talent thriving internationally.

A widely shared post attributed to ESPN Africa on X listed several prominent players of Nigerian heritage anticipated at the tournament:

Switzerland: Manuel Akanji and Noah Okafor.

Austria: David Alaba and Carney Chukwuemeka.

Analysts and fans have already speculated about a hypothetical “Nigerian XI” made up of these diaspora stars, which on paper could rival some of the world’s strongest teams.

Names such as Saka, Musiala, Olise, Akanji, and Alaba are often highlighted due to their elite-level experience in top European leagues.

The phenomenon also raises questions about Nigerian football structures, including player development, talent identification, and long-term strategic planning.

While homegrown talents like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman continue to represent Nigeria, missing out on the tournament has intensified discussions on reforms needed to retain future generations of talent.

As the World Cup progresses, Nigerian fans globally are expected to feel both disappointment over the Super Eagles’ absence and pride in the presence of so many players of Nigerian heritage.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs until July 19, and although Nigeria will not compete as a team, its football DNA will remain evident throughout the tournament.
