Keir Starmer resigns as UK prime minister

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation after less than two years in office, ending a tenure characterized by policy reversals and declining public approval.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said, “Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first,” as he confirmed he would step down as Labour Party leader.

He added that the Labour Party would begin the process of selecting a new leader in July, while he remains in office as prime minister until a successor is chosen.

His main political rival, Andy Burnham, is expected to return to Parliament following a recent by-election win, positioning him as a potential contender in the leadership race.

Starmer said he would ensure an orderly transfer of power and pledged full support for whoever succeeds him, noting that Britain would hand over leadership before Parliament reconvenes in September.

He also made a reflection about his tenure, saying he was leaving behind a “stronger and fairer” country despite political scandals, internal party pressure, and growing competition from Reform UK.
