Court remands Sowore in Kuje

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.
The court directed that Sowore remain in custody until Wednesday, June 24, 2026, when hearing in the matter is expected to continue.
The case stems from a two-count charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), which accuses him of cyberstalking and criminal defamation over a social media post in which he described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.”
Prosecutors argue that the statements were false and capable of inciting public disorder under provisions of the amended Cybercrimes Act.
The legal dispute has seen a series of procedural developments, including Sowore’s initial refusal to delete the posts, a court ruling requiring him to enter his defence, and his later decision to represent himself after withdrawing from his legal team.
His absence from a scheduled court sitting in June 2026 led the prosecution to describe his conduct as a delay tactic, prompting the court to revoke his self-recognition bail and issue a bench warrant for his arrest.
On Monday, the court dismissed his motion alleging bias by the trial judge and ordered that he be remanded as proceedings continue mid-week.
