Outrage as UNIOSUN student dies amid alleged lack of emergency care

Public anger has erupted at the University of Osun (Osun State University) following the death of a 400-level student, Grace Osunlakin, amid claims of inadequate medical facilities on campus.

Students staged a protest accusing the institution of negligence, insisting the tragedy could have been avoided if proper emergency healthcare services were available at the Ifetedo campus.

Some protesters alleged that the university collects medical-related fees without providing functional clinics, doctors, or essential equipment needed to handle emergencies.

The deceased, a criminology and security studies student, reportedly collapsed after suffering a sudden health crisis shortly after completing academic activities earlier in the week.

Student representatives further claimed that she required oxygen support but could not access it at the campus medical facility, which they described as poorly equipped and understaffed.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) also condemned the incident, describing it as avoidable and blaming what it called institutional negligence, while demanding urgent reforms and better healthcare provision.

However, the university rejected allegations that the student was denied treatment at its health centre, stating that she was not taken there during the emergency.

According to the institution, Osunlakin had completed her academic defence and left campus for her off-campus residence, where she later experienced a medical emergency.

The school further explained that she was eventually taken to a nearby health facility after her condition worsened, but she was confirmed dead on arrival despite attempts to revive her.

It added that the student had a known history of asthma and that her case had been documented at the university’s health records, while insisting staff and lecturers were actively involved in efforts to assist her during the incident.
