NDC Files Appeal, Uploads Obi’s Name to INEC Portal Amid Court Battle

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has uploaded the name of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal after filing an appeal and an application for stay of execution against a court ruling that ordered the party’s deregistration.
The National Leader of the party, Senator Seriake Dickson, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, stating that the party has served both the appeal and the stay application on the INEC Chairman and urged the commission to act strictly in line with the law.
Dickson maintained that the NDC remains a duly registered political party in Nigeria, noting that it has participated in all electoral processes and successfully conducted its primaries under INEC supervision.
“The Nigeria Democratic Congress has come to stay and remains a duly registered party in Nigeria which has participated in all the political processes so far,” the statement read.
He explained that the party has been granted access to the INEC portal to upload its candidates for the 2027 general elections, confirming that his name and that of presidential candidate Peter Obi have already been uploaded, while the vice-presidential candidate’s name will be submitted after completing the required documentation.
The former Bayelsa State governor added that the NDC is operating within INEC’s election timetable, noting that submissions for National Assembly candidates will close on July 11, while governorship and state assembly nominations will end on July 17.
Dickson appealed to party members to remain calm, stressing that reconciliation efforts had already begun following the primaries and assuring unsuccessful aspirants that they would be accommodated in campaign structures and committees.
“With the appeal and stay of execution application now before the courts, the judiciary will determine the next course of action in accordance with the law,” he said.
The statement further read: “Today, the NDC has filed an appeal against the ruling as well as a stay of execution/injunction, which has been served with a covering letter to the INEC chairman and his team to do what is right according to law and what is legally sensible… What is left is the administrative process of submitting the names to INEC, and we have been granted access to the portal to upload our qualified candidates.”
The development comes amid ongoing legal battles over the NDC’s registration status following a recent Federal High Court decision in Lokoja.
