INEC Extends Voter Registration Deadline, Launches Online Self-Service Portal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise to July 24, 2026, in a move to give more eligible Nigerians additional time to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The extension comes amid increased turnout at registration centres across the country, with many prospective voters reportedly experiencing congestion, system delays, and difficulty completing their registration within the earlier deadline.

INEC also announced the introduction of an online self-service registration portal, designed to allow eligible Nigerians to begin or complete parts of their voter registration process digitally before final biometric capture at designated physical centres.

According to the commission, the digital platform is part of broader electoral reforms aimed at improving efficiency, reducing overcrowding at registration centres, and modernising Nigeria’s voter database management system.

The new portal will allow users to pre-fill personal information, schedule appointments, and manage registration details before visiting INEC offices for fingerprint and facial biometric verification.

INEC stated that the innovation is intended to simplify the process, particularly for young voters and urban residents who face logistical challenges accessing physical registration centres.

The commission also noted that the extension will ensure that no eligible Nigerian is disenfranchised due to timing constraints or technical bottlenecks experienced during the exercise.

Officials explained that the decision followed internal assessments of registration progress nationwide, as well as feedback from stakeholders calling for more time to accommodate first-time voters and those seeking transfers or corrections.

INEC further emphasized that the CVR exercise remains open to new registrants, replacements of lost PVCs, updates of voter information, and transfers of polling units where necessary.

The electoral body reassured Nigerians that the updated timeline will not affect preparations for upcoming elections, as data collation and verification processes are being conducted simultaneously.

It also urged citizens to take advantage of the extended deadline and the new digital platform to ensure seamless participation in the electoral process.

Civil society organisations and election observers have described the extension as a positive step toward increasing voter inclusion, particularly among youths who represent a significant portion of new registrants.

The commission reiterated its commitment to transparent, credible, and inclusive elections, stressing that reforms such as digital registration are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
