Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has appealed to wealthy Nigerians, particularly entertainers such as Burna Boy, Davido, and Asake, to support vulnerable citizens through charitable initiatives.
Speaking in Lokoja, Kogi State, on Saturday, during the launch of the national community food bank, Tinubu said the government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of catering for all citizens, urging affluent individuals to contribute towards alleviating hardship among the less privileged.
The First Lady noted that Nigeria has many successful people whose resources can make a positive impact on the lives of those in need, adding that priorities must shift towards supporting communities.
“Nigeria is a great country. We have a lot of wealthy people. But our priorities are different. And I think it’s high time we started helping those who need help in the country,” she said.
Tinubu specifically appealed to young people in the entertainment industry, citing international music star Akon as an example of a celebrity who uses his influence and resources for humanitarian causes.
“I want to appeal to our young ones in the entertainment industry,” she said.
“I’ve mentioned it before, and I will use Akon, a music icon who does a lot of great charity work.”
The First Lady called on popular Nigerian artistes including Burna Boy, Asake, and Davido to establish foundations aimed at supporting poor and vulnerable Nigerians.
“The Burna Boys of this world, Asake, all of them, Davido. We want to see you with one foundation or the other, helping the poor with your money,” she said.
Tinubu also reiterated her advocacy for Nigerians to explore small-scale businesses, including akara production and other petty trades, as part of efforts to improve livelihoods.
She acknowledged that luxury items are not wrong but stressed that successful individuals can still enjoy their wealth while extending support to those struggling.
“Good cars are good; a Maybach is good. Rolls-Royce is good, but still you can still help. The burden on the government is huge,” she said.
The First Lady added that collective support from government, private individuals, and wealthy citizens would contribute to addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable Nigerians.
