UNICEF Confirms Authenticity of Viral Photos Showing Messi Bathing Baby Yamal

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has confirmed that viral photographs showing Argentina football superstar Lionel Messi bathing a baby who later became Spain international star Lamine Yamal are authentic and were taken nearly two decades ago during a charity photoshoot.
The images, which resurfaced online during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, attracted global attention after football fans discovered the remarkable coincidence that Messi, then a rising Barcelona player, had unknowingly appeared in a charity photograph with a child who would later become one of the biggest young talents in world football.
UNICEF confirmed that the photographs were taken in 2007 as part of a charity calendar project organised by the Fundació FC Barcelona in collaboration with UNICEF, aimed at raising awareness and support for children’s welfare programmes.
The pictures show a young Messi, who was 20 years old at the time, interacting with a baby during the photoshoot at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona, with the child later identified as Lamine Yamal, who was only a few months old at the time.
According to reports, Yamal’s family participated in the charity initiative after being selected through a local community programme, with the photographs becoming an unexpected symbol of football history years later.
The images gained widespread attention after Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, shared one of the pictures on social media as Spain’s teenage sensation continued to make headlines on the international stage.
Following the renewed interest, several media organisations contacted UNICEF for verification, prompting the organisation to confirm that the photos were genuine and not digitally altered.
UNICEF explained that the photoshoot was part of efforts to promote its partnership with FC Barcelona, with footballers participating in campaigns designed to support children around the world.
At the time the pictures were taken, Messi was beginning to establish himself as a key player for Barcelona, while Yamal was still an infant who had no indication of the remarkable football career ahead of him.
Years later, Yamal emerged as one of football’s brightest young stars, becoming a record-breaking player for both FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team.
The teenager has drawn comparisons with some of the greatest players in the game due to his technical ability, maturity and performances at the highest level despite his young age.
The viral photos have since been described by football fans as a symbolic passing of the torch between two generations of football talent, with Messi representing an era of dominance and Yamal emerging as one of the sport’s future stars.
The unusual connection between the two players has generated widespread reactions across social media, with many fans describing the images as one of football’s most remarkable coincidences.
UNICEF’s confirmation has put an end to speculation surrounding the authenticity of the photographs, establishing that the historic meeting between Messi and baby Lamine Yamal was indeed real and captured 18 years before their paths became linked again through football.
