Mary Habila: APM Demands Umahi’s Suspension, Independent Probe

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to suspend the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, and order an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mary Habila, a physiotherapist who reportedly died at the minister’s residence in Ebonyi State.
The opposition party made the demand in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, arguing that allowing the minister to remain in office while investigations continue could affect public confidence in the process and raise concerns about accountability.
APM said an independent and transparent investigation was necessary to establish the facts surrounding Habila’s death and ensure that justice was served without interference.
The party expressed concern over what it described as unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances of the incident, including reports about how Habila arrived at the minister’s residence, the events leading to her death and allegations of pressure concerning burial arrangements.
Habila, a physiotherapist, reportedly died on June 27, 2026, at a building within the residence of the Minister of Works in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, where she was said to have been part of a medical team attending to the minister.
The Ebonyi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the incident, describing the matter as sensitive and stating that efforts were ongoing to establish the actual cause of death.
The police said a forensic autopsy was considered necessary to scientifically determine the cause of death and ensure a transparent investigation, although reports indicated that Habila’s family initially opposed the post-mortem examination.
Umahi has denied any wrongdoing in connection with the incident and has called for a comprehensive forensic investigation, including an autopsy, to determine the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death.
The minister also dismissed allegations of foul play, describing the issue as one that should not be politicised, while insisting that the truth should emerge through proper investigation.
APM, however, maintained that the minister’s position as a serving member of the Federal Executive Council required additional transparency, arguing that his temporary suspension would allow investigators to conduct their work without questions about possible influence.
The party said the President’s action would demonstrate commitment to the rule of law and reassure Nigerians that public officials are subject to accountability regardless of their position.
The demand by APM adds to growing calls from civil society groups and political organisations for an independent probe into the incident, with several groups also urging authorities to ensure that the investigation is credible and free from interference.
Meanwhile, investigations into Habila’s death remain ongoing as authorities continue efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and provide answers to questions raised by members of the public.
