Police restore calm In Osun

The Osun State Police Command has restored normalcy in Osogbo, the state capital, after a violent clash between rival factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) disrupted activities in parts of the city.

The clash reportedly occurred on Monday during protests by a faction of the transport union, with tensions escalating after disagreements among members over union leadership and access to motor parks across the state.

According to reports, some NURTW members staged protests at major motor parks in Osogbo, including complaints that vehicles belonging to their faction were being prevented from operating at certain garages.

The development later resulted in a confrontation between rival groups, forcing security operatives to intervene to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

The Osun State Police Command, through its spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident and said officers were quickly deployed after receiving distress calls about the disturbance.

The police said minimal force was used to disperse protesters and restore peace, adding that officers had been stationed at various motor parks across the state to prevent a fresh outbreak of violence.

The Command urged leaders and members of the affected NURTW factions to immediately stop all acts of hostility and resolve their grievances through dialogue rather than violence.

The police also warned that anyone found to have participated in violence or committed criminal acts during the confrontation would face the full weight of the law.

The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, CP Ibrahim Gotan, appealed to residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities without fear, assuring citizens that security agencies were monitoring the situation.

The Command further called on members of the public to provide credible information that could assist ongoing investigations into the incident.

The latest clash adds to previous disputes involving rival NURTW groups in Osogbo over control of motor parks and union administration, issues that have occasionally led to violence and disruption of commercial activities in the state.

Security agencies have continued to maintain presence around strategic locations in Osogbo as authorities work to prevent further clashes and ensure the free movement of residents and transport operators.

The police said investigations into the incident are ongoing, with a commitment to ensuring that those responsible for any breach of peace are identified and prosecuted.
