Teenager dies, several injured In Spain

A 13-year-old boy has died while several others sustained injuries after a fountain collapsed during celebrations marking Spain’s victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca province, Spain.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Monday when football supporters gathered at the Árbol Gordo fountain to celebrate Spain’s historic triumph in the World Cup.

Reports said the teenager was among a group of young fans celebrating inside the fountain structure when part of the installation suddenly gave way due to the pressure from the crowd gathered on it.

The collapse caused debris from the structure to fall on the teenager, leaving him trapped beneath the wreckage as emergency responders rushed to the scene.

Police officers and emergency personnel worked to remove the debris and free the boy, but despite efforts to save him, he was later pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.

At least two other people were injured in the incident, with some reports indicating that three people sustained serious injuries following the collapse. Emergency services were deployed immediately after receiving distress calls from the celebration venue.

The accident occurred shortly after Spain defeated Argentina in the World Cup final, sparking nationwide celebrations across the country as supporters gathered in cities and towns to celebrate the national team’s success.

Spain secured the 2026 World Cup trophy after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in extra time to deliver the country’s second men’s World Cup title.

However, what was expected to be a night of joy and celebration turned into mourning for residents of Ciudad Rodrigo following the death of the young supporter.

The Ciudad Rodrigo City Council expressed sadness over the incident, offering condolences to the family of the teenager and sympathising with those injured during the collapse.

The council described the tragedy as a painful moment for the community, noting that a celebration intended to unite residents over Spain’s football success had instead brought grief and sorrow.

As a mark of respect, the local authority announced a period of mourning, with municipal flags lowered to half-mast between July 20 and July 22 in honour of the deceased teenager.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse, including the condition of the fountain structure and the number of people gathered on it at the time of the incident.

The tragedy adds to concerns over safety during large public celebrations, where huge crowds often gather in streets and public spaces following major sporting victories.

While millions of Spanish fans continued celebrating their country’s historic World Cup success, residents of Ciudad Rodrigo were left mourning the loss of a teenager whose life was cut short during the festivities.
