Alaafin Relaxes Oro Restriction For Female BECE Candidates In Oyo

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade I, has approved a modification to the movement restrictions associated with the Oro Festival to allow female students participating in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to sit for their papers without disruption.

The adjustment was announced in a statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, following concerns over the clash between the traditional observance and the academic activities of female candidates.

The Oro Festival is a traditional Yoruba practice that involves restrictions on movement, particularly for women and non initiates, during specific periods of observance, with participants expected to remain indoors while rituals are conducted.

However, in consideration of the importance of education and the need to prevent students from missing their examinations, the monarch approved an exemption for female candidates who need to travel to examination centres.

The decision has been welcomed by residents and parents who expressed concerns that the festival schedule could have affected students preparing for one of the major examinations marking the transition from junior secondary school to senior secondary education.

The development highlights the balance traditional institutions often seek between preserving cultural practices and responding to contemporary social responsibilities, particularly in areas such as education and public welfare.

The Alaafin’s intervention is expected to enable affected students across Oyo town and surrounding communities to participate fully in the examination exercise while respecting the significance of the traditional event.
