Makinde Goes On Leave, Deputy Takes Charge

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has received approval from the Oyo State House of Assembly to proceed on his annual leave from August 10 to September 11, 2026, with Deputy Governor Barrister Bayo Lawal set to oversee the affairs of the state during his absence.

The approval followed a formal request submitted by Governor Makinde to the state lawmakers in line with constitutional requirements that mandate governors to notify their assemblies before embarking on extended absence from office.

The governor’s letter was presented before the Assembly during plenary by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over proceedings in the absence of Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, after which lawmakers unanimously approved the request.

During the period of Makinde’s absence, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal will act on behalf of the governor and coordinate the day to day administration of the state to ensure continuity in governance.

The Oyo State Assembly expressed confidence in Lawal’s ability to provide effective leadership during the period, noting that government activities and policies would continue without interruption.

According to the governor’s communication to the lawmakers, the annual leave will end on September 11, while Makinde is expected to officially resume duties on September 14, 2026.

The temporary transfer of responsibilities follows constitutional provisions that allow a deputy governor to assume authority when a governor is away from office after formally transmitting a letter to the state legislature.

Makinde’s latest leave arrangement comes as his administration continues to implement ongoing programmes across sectors including infrastructure, education, security and economic development in Oyo State.

The development also marks another instance where Governor Makinde has handed over responsibilities to his deputy during periods of absence, with previous arrangements made in accordance with constitutional procedures.
